Democrats are looking to tie Republican U.S. senate candidate George Allen to two contentious abortion-related measures from this year’s General Assembly session in a new TV ad hitting airwaves today.
The ad from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee focuses on two pieces of legislation: the so-called personhood bill that would define life as beginning at conception, and a measure to require ultrasounds prior to abortions.
The personhood bill failed this year, but a version of the ultrasound bill passed and was signed into law.
“It just seems like such an infringement on our lives. How dare they step into my life that way, it’s none of their business,” a woman names Pamela Howze says to begin the ad.
The ad then shows text reading: “George Allen voted against measures to protect women from discrimination,” and “George Allen opposed rights for women who were sexually assaulted in the workplace.”
Howze ends the ad: “George Allen is the last thing we need in Washington.”
“Tim Kaine’s Washington allies continue to demonstrate how desperate they are to talk about anything but the jobs and economic issues Virginia women face,” responded Allen campaign spokeswoman Emily Davis. “Women have been among the hardest hit in the Kaine-Obama economy.”
