New television ad targets Cuccinelli for refusal to return gifts

Terry McAuliffe, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, unveiled a new television ad today highlighting his Republican opponent Ken Cuccinelli’s refusal to return the $18,000 in gifts he received from Star Scientific and its CEO Jonnie Williams. The ad, titled “Gifts,” suggests that Cuccinelli should follow McDonnell’s lead, who had paid back more than $124,000 in loans and returned several gifts worth additional thousands to Williams.

“First Ken Cuccinelli failed to report thousands of dollars in gifts, and claimed that he had simply forgotten about a $1,500 turkey dinner.  Now he continues to refuse to return the thousands of dollars in scandal-tainted gifts that he received from Jonnie Williams and Star Scientific,” McAuliffe spokesman  Josh Schwerin said.  “Voters deserve to know about Ken Cuccinelli’s role in one of the worst political scandals in Virginia history, a role that is still playing out before our eyes on a daily basis.”

Cuccinelli spokeswoman Anna Nix said that the Republican was cleared by a Democratic prosecutor and has led the way in calling for a special session to address Virginia’s disclosure laws. “If Terry was serious about this matter, he would join Ken Cuccinelli in calling for a special session of the General Assembly to address ethics reform, but instead he just points fingers and refuses to address the problem,” Nix said.
